Lettuce is a member of the composite family (Lactuca sativa L.), an annual plant native to semi-temperate regions, cultivated for its edible leaves. This extraordinary species showcases a wide range of colors (greens, yellows, purples), textures (crispy, buttery, batavia) and various leaf shapes.
The leaves are naturally sweet in flavor and are consumed raw. The Butterhead lettuce, in particular, boasts soft textures that form compact, round heads with almost smooth edges.
General tips for cultivation include favoring temperate and humid climates. Different lettuce varieties can be cultivated under various climatic conditions, zones, and times of the year. To obtain good quality and abundant production, choose varieties that adapt best.
Additionally, the seeds for 'Reina de Mayo' lettuce should be sown from September to February in a seedbed, and transplanted when the seedlings have 3-4 leaves. This variety grows best in sunny, fertile, and light soils, with a harvest period of about 3-4 months post-sowing.
