The melon (Cucumis melo) is a trailing herbaceous plant cultivated for its fruit, a large berry highly sought after in summer for its high water content and sweet flavor. The plant features soft hairy stems that grow close to the ground. Flowers are yellow, with male, female, and hermaphrodite varieties. It is an extraordinarily polymorphic species regarding the type of fruit and pulp.
The fruit color varies from white to very dark green, passing through yellow, striated, and spotted (the Spanish Piel de Sapo). The shape of the fruit ranges from spherical to ellipsoidal, with sizes varying from small melons around 400 g to large ones weighing up to 10 kg. The pulp is aromatic, with smooth texture and colors including yellow, green, pink, and intermediate tones.
