The artichoke (Cynara scolymus) belongs to the Compositae family and is cultivated as food in temperate climates. The fleshy bracts of the inflorescence are used as food. This perennial plant delivers the best yields for 3-4 years. Each year, after winter, it regrows from the buried roots.
General Cultivation Tips for Artichokes:
Prefers soils rich in organic matter, medium consistency, deep, and fresh. With ample water, it tolerates salinity. It thrives in temperate climates; the minimum temperature is 5ºC and the optimum range is between 22-25ºC. Reproduction can be through seed or vegetatively. A good planting requires approximately 10,000 plants/Ha with a planting layout of 1m x 0.7m. The seeding period is from April to June and the transplanting period is from July to August. It's demanding in irrigation but does not tolerate waterlogged soils; it prefers fresh and well-drained soils. Incorporate organic fertilizer a couple of months before planting at a rate of 30 Tm/Ha and mineral fertilizer at a rate of 40UF of N-P-K, complemented with improvements in October before the harvest. Harvesting takes place in Autumn and continues through the entire winter.
GREEN GLOBE ARTICHOKE:
Vigorous plant with large light green leaves. Seeding: From March to June in seedbed, transplant when plants are about 10 cm long. The soil should be well fertilized. Harvesting: From December to March of the following year.
